Veg Masal Vadai

Prep Time:20 m     Cook Time:20 m
Makes:20

Ingredients

Yellow Split Peas - 1 cup
Vegetables           - 1 cup(grated carrot,beet,cabbage)
Onion                  - 1 
Green Chilli         - 1
Salt                     - as needed
Oil                      - to deep fry

To Grind
Ginger                 - a small piece
Garlic                  - 4 
Aniseed               - 3/4 tsp
Khus Khus            - 1/4 tsp
Cinnamon            - 1"piece
Clove                   - 3
Red Chilli             - 2

Method

  • Soak the yellow split peas for an hour.Add all the ingredients to grind and grind slightly coarsely.
                                    
       
  • Now add finely chopped onion,green chilli ,salt and the grated vegetables.Mix them all together.
                             
  • Meanwhile heat oil in a kadai to deep fry.Make small balls and flatten between palms and gently drop into oil and fry both sides.Place on a kitchen towel to absorb oil if any and then serve plain or with chutney.
                                    
       

Little Words

  • After adding veggies if the batter becomes loose sprinkle rice flour.
  • Adding beetroot gives a nice pink colour and also a slight sweetness in the vadai.

Masal Vadai



IngredientQuantity
Yellow Split Peas/Chana dal1/2 cup
Onion1
Ginger1/2"piece
Red Chilli2
Aniseed3/4 tsp
Poppy Seeds1/4 tsp
Cinnamon1 small piece
Cloves2
Green Chilli(optional)1
Coriander Leaves2 tblsp
Saltto taste
Oilto deep fry

Cooking Steps

  • Soak dal for an hour and grind slightly coarse with ginger,red chilli,aniseed,cinnamon,cloves and poppy seeds.
       
  • Now add finely chopped onion,coriander leaves,salt and mix well.
       

  • Make small balls and gently press between your palms and deep fry in hot oil till golden brown.
             
       
Little words
  • Garlic can be added if desired and also fresh curry leaves.
  • If using green chilli,add one red chilli.
  • Reserve about a tablespoon of dal and mix it later.
  • Let the flame be medium.
